The delivery man bought all the new dvds today , so they are now availible either from the website or shops very soon. The price is £19.99 for over 3 and a half hours of content. Nige is panicking in case its too much, but its in chapters so people can watch as much or as little as they want. Lets just hope it inspires and informs people to go and have there own adventures

Had two good days out with UCLAN students , B gully on Y garn and Parsley Fern Gully on upper cwm glas , It felt like a proper winter day and avalanche debris at the bottomn of cwm glas ,altough i think its all been stripped by thursdays storm . Still it was good to get back in winter mode

Its a climbing trip in greenland , saw this unclimbed wall last kayaking trip , it really inspired me ,now have just got to get climbing fit ,so i can pull my weight

Doing a lecture at Pete Baars place on Artic expeditions , based around various trips , its Called Bear Necessities for reasons that will be come obvious , It will be fairly light hearted with some nice shots , its free , but if anybody wants to donate some cash to the Moelfre lifeboat team on the night, i will make sure they get , Starts 7-30 i beleive at petes shop in Valley

With the poor weather the new dvd is taking shape have edited chapters on food ,packing ,kit , style and hydration , interviewed marcus Deumuth yesterday who had some interesting ideas on nutrition. The long process of gathering footage from 5 expeditions and working out what is useful is almost done, Its been good looking at it , a lot of good times and laughs, Hopefuly other people will find it interesting as well
At the moment we have pieces from Nigel Dennis ,Eila Marcus Deumuth ,simon Osbourne,Rodger Chandler Sid Sinfeild , Doug Cooper ,Loel Collins and am still chasing a few more ,so lots of opinions !!

Hanko Sea symposium

Just got back from Lofoten via a Finnish Sea Symposium , Very well run with over 250 people and a good atmosphere . Very different structure people pay a basic registration then pay for sessions with different coaches and themes . The sessions were each 90 mins ,so you had to think on your feet, but it did mean that you got paid a reasonable rate if you wanted to run 3-4 sessions
Always interesting to see how other countries structure there events and what symposium means . Lots of volunteers working hard which as always are the unsung heroes of these events.I wasnt quite sure about the Finnish pop songs the band were playing however!

Manged to link the Outer islands of Vaeroy and Rost Crossing the Maelstrom to Vaeroy , We had a variety of sea conditions from Ocean Swell anf fog ,I did it with Jann a local guide who thinks this is the first crossing to Rost although it has been attempted before,A great few days paddle with about 35 km crossings to both islands it feels like a big ocean crossing and you have to get it right to cross the Moskenstraumen, But a great experience

The boys and girls from P&H bought the New Aires down for its first play . The only one made so far. We had brian and robert from the states and Graham and some swedish retailers. Sid came along to help and we had a lively day on the Straits and a day at point lynas hiding from the Storms .Great to paddle faster than Delphin and it Looks good as well . North Stack

A 9.6 tide and a Northerly wind at North Stack ,Sid ,and rodger joined me for a play. We had aimed to play the top race ,but we couldn't even get into the eddy .It was big even early in the tide and there was no way we could get back the way we came. So it was onto South Stack and finish at Porth Dafarch. Awesome!

A presentation was done at the recent L5 conference Explainining The association of Paddlers/Coaches .The idea was well received and some of the myths surrounding it laid to rest. Lots of ideas came forward inccluding a traineee rep .Gear rep and ways we can have an active voice in things that effect us. Membership is steady and we have a good selection of excellent coaches and paddlers on board.it all feels very positive at the momentl

South Stack

A 9.4 Tide and no wind and lots of sun .The seaweed was frozen on the beach as we left and not much was happening at North Stack lots of speed but no shape . South Stack on the otherhand was perfect ,not to big ,but clean . A perfect day !

All tooled up to climb and the snows going and its 7 degrees.However Penhryn Mawr felt like a spring day and got a chance to try My new Cetus MV and compare it to Delphin with Rodger Chandler.The Delphin is solid as a rock and manoeuvres well just lacks speed and it is ugly. It does do what it says on the label. The Cetus is a thing of beauty and has speed just watch out its very lively and cruises home after your tired!!

Black Ladders

First time into the Ladders this season usual long day and descent in the dark ,where does the time go in that place!Did Gallipolli which i have wanted to do for years,Excellent although some off the turf is still a little aerated. Did a variation on crux pitch as it was thin and little gear,Went left and a great pull through some roofs and a great technical section thats well protected and the same grade V

Spent 2 stunning days with Lancaster university students in Snowdonia .unrivalled view's and light winds made it a memorable experience both for me and them i hope.The turf is well frozen and the ice forming and Big tim and phil have already been climbing in The Black Ladders.

Nige Robinson and i have starting to get together footage for a new DVDon Expeditioning skills ,its aimed at paddlers who want to start having there own week ,multi week adventures , We have already done a lot of the filming on the last expedition to Greenland we did and have contributions from Andy Stamp ,Howard Jeffs .Phil Eccles Russel Farrow Sid Sinfield. We have other well known expedition paddlers also who are contibuting. So its editing time over winter and it should be out next year

Been filming a promotional thing for the new Delphin for P&H . With the help of Sid Sinfield ,Rodger Chandler and Pete Baarsos summit to sea ,we went to Penrhyn Mawr and got some good footage of the new boat in action .The light was great and tjhe race was very usable due to a little wind against tide ,The most important part of the day was we all had a blast in the boat it was good fun

Just back from Greenland .We did a 3 week self contained trip and managed to get all the food and climbing gear in the boats albeit a bit tight ,Managed to do 3 big mountain routes up to E2 and some Mountaineering .Also achieved the circumnavigation of the Bib islands in the N.W of Greenland in the Upernavick area at 72 degrees north ,So all in all a good trip ,Stormy weather hit us for a few days ,but otherwise good and stunning scenery

A great weekend well organised by louise and Nige.A windy Saturday ,but a great day on sunday around Skomer led By julian and mark .The race around the Garland rock was big and we had 5 swimmers .I tagged along to get some shots and paddle the new delphin it was great in the big water and the swell and not to slow

Just spent a week on Lundy .paddled there and back about 4 and half hours both ways .Nige robinson Trevor messiah and dave larkin were the co paddlers/climbers and we are all pretty tired . Trevor managed a great effort on The Cuillan E5 one fall and a serious lead ,i managed to second with a very tight rope and we managed to climb every day and ticked off some classic routes . Altogether a fantastic week

The new P&H Delphin hot off the mould was put through its paces at Penhryn Mawr today ,Graham Richard ,Liz and Yosef from Finland had a great day playing. Its very different from how i remember the prototype . It was great fun, responsive stable and at the end of the day i wanted one! which was not to be for a while .

With the rudder option it could be a good boat for beginners , but i had a great time in the sunshine with good company

Glorious weather and a good tide for the first day of the symposium. I managed to paddle for the first time with two other Pand H paddlers Jim and Adam plus Richard and Liz from the company we took out the new Cetus MV and a host of others fresh from the wrappers. We were only supposed to be out for a couple of hours , but carried onto South Stack and North Stack for a top day out

Last day out for a while .I am pretty knackered anyway,9 days on the trot.Went up to Cloggy to have a look , with Libby.

Decided on Jubilee climb ,Brilliant 2nd pitch a full 45 m of mixed climbing quite pokey for the grade i thought with just enough gear on the hard bits.Got a bit of route on the last pitch was desperate.Walked out in the dark with big tim and chris who had just done Black Cleft.Its a big cliff and its Baltic !

Plenty of snow and cold nights meant winter had arrived for monday and tuesday at least this week. Plenty of snow on the trinity face .It was waist deep in places .The routes were a little scratchy ,lots of rime around,but turf was not really frozen .Baggy and co out doing stuff in glogwyn ddu and side of crib goch,Nobody else on trinity face on monday

Just spent a month in India exploring an area near Indian /Chinese border up in Ladakh.Unseasonal weather meant snow on high passes stopped us going over one pass at 5700m.Amazing place and the only people we came across were the nomads bringing there livestock down for winter

We came across wolves ,wild asses Yaks and Eagles .It was a very barren and dry place.

Got a chance to paddle the new P&h boats in pembroke this weekend.The new cetus mv fitted me perfectly,not quite aas fast as cetus and not as stable it still responds and turns very well.I want one!

Walso got a chance to paddle the Delphin the new playboat .While not pleasing on the eye at the moment it certainly is very responsive.Looking forward to a proper session in the races in a couple of weeks

Mosekenstaumen or the Maelstrom. Managed to paddle this out to Vaeroy with Nigel .A long term ambition fufilled and one of the best days i have ever had in a kayak.We caught the whirpool early and although exciting it was ok. Arrived at Vaeroy at 9 pm and had a great ferry journey back to Moskenes

The coast from Church bay to Carmel Head is often missed by kayakers on there way to the Skerries.It is fantastic with a brilliant through trip and arch near Carmel head.You need to be there at high water and then you can play on the race off Carmel head and return using the Ebb

The artic terns are at the skerries .5000 breeding pairs according to the rspb wardens denise and jenny. Tey are happy for kayakers to come up and watch the terns in front of the lighthouse,just make sure you land at the back and walk up via the stairs near the solar panels .then pop over the wall and check with them its ok to come round.

North stack was running well today a big springs combined with a S.W Force 4 picked it up well.As usual midweek nobody there even though its half term!!My finnish friend Yosaf was in his element and we were joined by a solitary jetskier.

High pressure is bringing cold stable weather .No snow on the hills yet but a lovely day to visit Yns Dulas of the east coast .The usual 3o or so seals were around to greet as and it was very quiet on the water as you could guess. How the old tower on the island survives the easterly gales i have no idea ,but the cormorants and shags that use it as a nesting area are pretty pleased

Good conditions on the mountains today . Lots of teams in The nameless Cwm ,some on Clogwyn Ddu right hand and one team on Manx wall . Not a huge amount of ice ,but plenty of frozen turf to make it in condition.Hard top layer of old snow and a ridge of high pressure and lots of sunshine to make the views stunning

New 4 star award

The new bcu 4 star award is Proving popular. I have been running the new training courses and they seem to be a good step between the old 4 star and 5 star . The 3 days allows for a lot of practical training to take place without having to worry about the coaching elements , it makes you realize how much was crammed into the old Level 3 training

It will be interesting to see if people now bypass the coaching award and just go straight for the 4 star sea as a guiding award in moderate conditions . The general feel is its definely a step above the old level 3 in remit.

Anyway its a pleasure to work on and a bit of a positive step as normaly all we get is frustration from the new award systems

Point Lynas

One of the most accesible tide races on Anglesey.10 minutes paddle from a sheltered bay and your ready to play and its raerely used compared to the other classics.Best on the ebb and aim to arrive at H.W Slack any wind from N to NW will pick it up and it can get very big!.However in light winds it has a great eddy to work from and lots to do

Had an interesting time with bears this year up in greenland. One wanted to join us for a chat in our tent and ripped through the front while we were having a snooze. Luckily managed to persuade it to leave by a combination of smelly socks and a lot of shouting. The mother and here two cubs were pretty persistant and came back twice again .one at 4 in the morning involving a comedy chase with the gun trying to retreive our hatch cover she had run off with. There will be a full article in Ocean Paddler soon . This young male also got a little too close

The seal pubs are still hanging in at North Stack,most are swimming around ,but there are still a few fat boys hanging around in the back of the cave waiting for a feed . So take care if you land for a pee there pretty well camoflaged.
